Mr Parker Ormond, from the University of Otago College of Education Dunedin Campus, came with a surprise to school – our new haka. Earlier in the year, Parker had offered to write a haka just for Newfield Park School [Te Kura o Nga Purapura]. Our first step was to collect ideas from our school community. These thoughts would inspire and guide Parker as he came up with the words and actions for the haka. The second step was last week when Parker came and introduced the words to the Senior students in the kapahaka team. The hakas first official performance will be at the Polyfest later on this term.
Ko wai te tira hou tu mai nei???
Ko te Kura o Nga Purapura e!!!
Ruia te purapura ki te mara matauranga
Tupu aka ana nga hua nei
Te rapu matauranga!
Te kotahitanga! hi ha hi
Ma wai matou – e whangai e?
Ma ratou! Ma matou! Ma tatou eee!
Ko te pae tawhiti whaia kia tata
Ko te pae tata whakamaua kia tina
Haumi e! Hui e! – Taiki e!
Thank you Parker. We will treasure the gift you have given to us.
